Lohri is a happy winter festival widely enjoyed in North Indian places like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and by Punjabi people worldwide. It usually happens around January 13th or 14th, marking the end of winter.
When is Lohri?Drik Panchang says Lohri will be on Sunday, January 14, 2024, and Makar Sankranti follows on January 15, 2024.
Why Lohri Matters:Lohri is a special time both for religious reasons, linked to harvest and winter solstice, and culturally, as communities come together to celebrate and be thankful for a good harvest.
How We Celebrate:
Bonfire Fun (Lohri di Aag): The main thing in Lohri is the bonfire. We gather around it, throw sesame seeds, jaggery, and popcorn into it, sing songs, and dance.
Dance Time (Bhangra and Gidda): Traditional dances like Bhangra (by guys) and Gidda (by gals) are a big part of Lohri. They involve energetic and rhythmic moves.
Yummy Food: We make special Lohri foods with sesame seeds, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn. Dishes like Sarson da Saag and Makki di Roti are also loved during this festival.
